The ANHINGA looks like a snake when swimming

ORDER: SULIFORMES

FAMILY: Anhingidae

Anhinga has a long neck that distinguish them from cormorants. Long sharp dagger-like bill with no hook used to spear fish. Brown plumes on small pointed head. Silver white markings on upperparts. Long tails. Inhabitant of wetlands. Known also as ‘snake bird’ in reference to its habit of swimming with its body immersed so deeply that only its long thin, sinous neck, pointed head, and sharp bill stick out above the water. Do not have waterproof plumage and so spend a lot of time drying off their wings. Can live up to 10 years.
