Owls with a bright white heart-shaped face and distinctive black eyes. Gray cinnamon color above and white below. Long-rounded wings and short tails. Females have a darker reddish color and spotted chests and are thus more showy than males. These owls can rotate their head extensively and possess a more acute sense of hearing than most birds. They do not hoot as other birds but emit a distinctive hard raspy screech sound. These birds are widely distributed in all continents except Antarctica. Their length is about 13-16 in (32-40 cm). Low flying hunting of rodents occurs exclusively at night. Excellent low-light vision to easily find prey by sight and sound alone. They swallow prey entire. Use as biological control in agriculture to replace rodenticides as they keep rat, moles and mice populations low. The barn owl nests in holes in trees, crevices, caves, and burrows in river banks. In some countries they are considered as birds of bad omen. Can live up to 15 years.

Lechuza de cara blanca brillante en forma de corazón y de ojos muy negros. De plumaje gris canelo en su parte superior y blanco en su parte inferior. De alas largas y redondas y de cola corta. Las hembras son más vistosas que los machos y tienen un color rojizo oscuro y pecho con puntos negros. Rotan mucho su cabeza y poseen una aguda audición. No ululan sino que emiten un sonido ronco y chillón. Esta especie se encuentra ampliamente distribuida en todos los continentes excepto en la Antártica. Mide entre 32-40 cm. Vuela bajo para cazar rodedores durante la noche. Posee una aguda visión y una audición excepcional que le permite encontrar su presa con facilidad. Se traga entera presas pequeñas. Se usa en control biológico para controlar poblaciones de rodedores en agricultura. Nida en huecos de árboles, cavernas, y en la tierra junto a las orillas de ríos. Ave de mal agüero en muchos paises. Vive hasta los 15 años.
