Porphyrio martinica

The Purple Gallinule is a vividly colored rail that inhabits tropical and subtropical wetlands up to 2600 m (8500 ft) of altitude. Its size is about 33 cm (13 in). Inhabits in swamps, ponds, marshes with aquatic vegetation such as water lilies, water lettuce, and water hyacinth. Due to its large legs and long thin and tender toes they can easily walk on floating vegetation. Colors change as the bird plumage is iridescent. The head, neck, and breast of the adult is brilliant purple, the central part of the body is deep blue, and indigo near the short tail. The undertail coverts are white, the legs and feet yellow, and the bill and naked frontal shield are tricolored with a yellow tip and the rest red, and blue. The immature has tan on the head, neck, and breast, and olive brown at the rear. They feed on frogs, invertebrates or tubers. Like most rails, Purple Gallinules swim well, and they perch high in bushes and trees, where their long toes make them agile climbers. They make their nest on aquatic plants and lay from 4 to 7 cream-colored eggs with brown dots.
