Groove-billed ANI
Garrapatero ComÚN

Crotophaga sulcirostris

This is a very gregarious species that is always found in noisy groups. The adult is mainly flat black, with a long tail, deep ridged black beak and a brown iris. The male weighs about 80 g and the female 70 g. Its flight is somewhat weak but the bird runs well and usually feeds on the ground. This ani is found in open and semi-open country and areas under cultivation. A member of a smooth-billed ani group often sits on a high perch and watches for danger while the rest forage. The smooth-billed ani feeds on termites and large insects and even lizards and frogs. They will occasionally remove ticks and other parasites from grazing animals. Nests are built by several birds at the same time. Then several smooth-billed ani females typically lay bluish-colored eggs and incubate them in the same communal nest. The nest is placed 2–6 m (6.6–19.7 ft) high in a tree. Late-laying females bury the eggs of early-laying females with twigs and leaves, which can create a number of layers of eggs; only the top layer eventually hatches. As many as 36 eggs may be found in a single nest. Incubation takes about 13 to 15 days. All group members incubate the eggs and feed the young. Juvenile smooth-billed anis from first broods stay with their natal group and help feed the second brood. Its name implies that it feeds on ticks.
