The flamingo is a tall and slender bird. It has a long and flexible neck and long pink legs with dark joints. Its height ranges from 125 to 160 cm, wingspan of 140 to 165 cm, and it weighs up to 3.0 kg. Males and females differ in size. Gregarious behavior. The eyes are small with dark iris. Plumage is orange pink and darker on the rump, head and neck. Primary and secondary feathers of the wings are black and the rest is bright red. The peculiar bill is strongly curved and has a black tip, red-orange in the middle and pale yellow at the base. Its tongue is large, thick and fleshy. It separates food from mud. Webbed feet with short toes. They prefer seawater than freshwater where they feed on green algae, crustaceans, mollusks, invertebrates, insects and protozoans and take their food by removing the mud with the legs. They tolerate high amounts of salinity. Nests have a shape of a pyramid that may reach up to a height of 50 cm and a base of approximately 80 cm. Female lays 1-2 eggs that are incubated by both parents for 28-32 days. The birds do not sit on the eggs but they keep a close contact while standing next to the nest. Flamingos can live up to 40 years. A symbol of immortality in some religions.

Es una ave grande e inconfundible que mide entre 125 y 160 cm, la extensión de sus alas fluctua entre 140 y 165 cm y de un peso entre 2.2 a 3.4 Kg. Cuello demasiado largo y muy flexible. De inconfundible color rosado y un intenso color rojo en sus alas cuyas plumas primarias y secundarias son negras. Posee un pico grande doblado hacia abajo con una lengua grande y carnosa que le permite separar rapidamente sus presas del fango. Posee patas largas rosadas con articulaciones oscuras, pies palmeados con dedos cortos. Se encuentra principalmente en aguas saladas ya que tolera altas concentraciones de sal. También viven en lagos o sitios inundados poco profundos para poder estar de pie. Se alimenta de algas verdes, insectos, moluscos y protozoarios. Vuelan largo y sostenido y se agrupan en forma de V. Se aprecia su longitud cuando vuelan. Sus nidos tienen forma de pirámide con una altura entre 20 a 45 cm y con una base hasta de 80 cm. Ponen de 1 a 2 huevos que ambos padres incuban durante 28 a 32 días. No se sientan en el nido sino que estando de pie se recuestan a él. El flamenco puede vivir hasta 40 años. Es un símbolo de inmortalidad en varias religiones.
