Machetornis rixosa

The Cattle Tyrant (Machetornis rixosa) is a highly terrestrial tyrant-flycatcher. Its length is 19 cm (7.5 in) and weight of 29 to 40 g (1.0–1.4 oz). It inhabits dry open woodlands with scattered trees from altitudes from 500 to 2700 m. It is a resident of pastureland, agricultural land and often in gardens. Its plumage is pale olive-brown in the upperparts and yellow in the underparts. A gray crown with a concealed orange crest not seen in the female. Gray head with a narrow dusky eye stripe. Red iris. White throat. A black thin bill and black tarsus. It is a long legged and short winged flycatcher. Wing and tail are brownish. Underparts are bright yellow including under wing coverts. It forages in pairs or small groups on the ground where it adopts an upright posture to search for insects. It also perches on the backs of cattle and horses where they mostly sally for flying or ground insects. Ticks are not its preferred prey. Hawking for insects from high perches is also common. It has a pugnacious behavior and habit of displacing other species of their nests. It builds a bulky nest or stole it from others. Posture is from 3 to 4 creamed buffed eggs with chestnut and gray streaks that are incubated for 14 days. Fledgings leave nest 2 weeks after hatching. Molothrus bonariensis parasites their nests.

El Atrapamoscas Ganadero es una especie de hábito terrestre y de temperament agresivo. Mide 19 cm y pesa entre 29 y 40 g. Habita en bosques secos y abiertos con vegetación esparcida entre los 800 a 2700 m de altura. Frecuenta pastizales, cultivos y a menudo visita jardines. De plumaje café oliváceo pálido en su parte superior y amarillo en sus partes inferiores. De corona gris con una cresta pequeña escondida de color anaranjado. Esta cresta no la tiene la hembra. Cabeza gris con una franja ocular delgada. Tiene iris rojo. Garganta blanca. Su pico es negro y delgado y su tarso negro. Las alas y cola parduzcas. Cola con bordes pálidos. Su parte inferior es de color amarillo brillante lo mismo las cobertoras alares. Se le encuentra en pares o en grupos en el suelo donde caminan en posición erguida, caminan, saltan y atrapan insectos, lombrices y gusanos. Perchan sobre los lomos del ganado y sobre lomos de caballos y de alli vuelan a capturar insectos al vuelo al suelo para atrapar su presa. Construye su propio nido y a veces roba nidos de otras aves. Pone de 3 a 4 huevos color crema claro con manchas café grisáceas. La incubación es de 14 días y los polluelos dejan el nido 2 semanas después de la eclosion. El chamón parásito parasita los nidos de esta ave.
