The Common Tody-Flycatcher (Todirostrum cinereum) is a common and widespread species of humid forest edges and open areas with few trees. This bird is not present in the Amazon basin but in the west of the Andean range. It has a glossy black crown, slate gray behind the crown. Yellow eyes. Its lower part is yellow and bright yellow underparts. Long black bill and rather broad for this type of bird. Black wings with yellow borders. Dark rounded tail with whitish-yellow tips and white spots on the tail. It is found in pairs or in groups. It sallies to trap insects under leaves and when it traps them it makes an audible snap. It feeds on fruit. It builds a hanging pouch-shaped nest made of plant fibers and spiderweb. It is found in pairs and holds its tail not in a straight way. The female lays 2 to 3 white eggs that are incubated for about 2 weeks.

La Espatulilla Común se encuentra a alturas menores de 2000 m en la región baja de las costa del Pacífico y Atlántico pero no en la Guajira. Habita en los bosques abiertos, manglares, matorrales, pastizales y a lo largo de los ríos. Esta se la reconoce por su corona de color negro brillante. Iris amarillo. Parte superior oliva y grisácea atrás de la coronilla. La garganta y partes inferiores de un matiz amarillento. Su pico es negro y plano. Tiene alas castaño oscuro con márgenes blanco-amarillosas. Tiene cola negra en forma redondeada con puntas blancas sobre las plumas. Insectívoro y frugívoro. En parejas o en grupos. La hembra pone de 2 a 3 huevos blancos que incuba por 2 semanas.
