Pitangus sulphuratus

The Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) is one of the largest species of the Tyranidae family. It measures from 25 to 28 cm (9.8 – 11 in) in length and weighs 53 to 71 g (1.9 – 2.5 oz). It inhabits in a wide variety of habitats from forest edges to grasslands including gardens up to altitudes of 1500 m (4900 ft). It has broad shoulders and a short tail. Long and marked white supercilium that extends from its forehead to its nape. Iris is dark. A wide white band encircles the head. Crown conceals a yellow stripe. The sides of head are black. It also shows a small yellow malar patch. Brown plumage covers the upperparts and tail. Wings are olive-brown. The short tail and wings present visible cinnamon edges. The bill is short, thick, and black. The white throat extends to upper chest that limits with a bright striking yellow plumage throughout its underparts. Black tarsus. Insectivorous and also feeds on fruit, seed, reptiles, and fish. It hawks on flying insects or drops to ground for food. Nest made by both sexes has a single side entrance. Conspicuous. Monogamous: only mates with one partner. The size of the clutch is 2-4 yellowish creamy eggs with purplish brown markings that are incubated by the female for 15 to 16 days. Chicks are fed by both parents and fledge after 17–18 days.

El Bichofué Gritón está catalogado entre las aves más grandes de los tiranos. Mide entre 25 a 28 cm de longitud y pesa entre 53 a 71 g. Se le encuentra en una amplia variedad de hábitats particularmente en pie de lomas, bordes de bosques húmedos, pastizales, cuerpos de agua, cultivos y hasta en jardines de las ciudades de alturas montanas menores de los 1500 m. De amplios hombros y cola corta. De garganta blanca y de intenso y brillante color amarillo en sus partes inferiores. Tiene coronilla negra circundada por una ancha banda en forma de diadema de color blanco. Posee un parche amarillo en la coronilla que solo es visible cuando levanta la cresta. Su dorso o parte superior es café, más oscuro en las puntas de las plumas de las alas y cola. Tarso negro. Su pico es negro, robusto y sirve para distinguirlo de otras especies similares. Se alimenta de insectos que atrapa en el aire. También vuela en picada al suelo para atrapar su alimento que consta de pequeños invertebrados, también peces en aguas bajas, y frutas. Es un ave tímida y monógama. Ambos contruyen el nido con una entrada lateral. Su postura consta de 2 a 4 huevos color crema con tintes café-morado que la hembra incuba durante 15-16 días. Las crías son alimentadas por ambos padres y vuelan del nido 17-18 días después de la oclusión.
