COLOMBIAN CHACHALACA 
GUACHARACA COLOMBIANA

Ortalis columbiana

This endemic rather large chachalaca has a length from 45 to 60 cm (18 – 24 in) and an average weight of 550 g (19 oz). It is found at altitudes from 100 to 2500 m (328-8200 ft). No sexual dimorphism. It inhabits mostly in the edges of humid forests in the western regions of the Andes. It is observed in forest edges near pastures and cultivated areas. Iris is dark brown. The bill is gray at its base and white toward the tip. Mandible clearer than the maxilla. It has a a red dewlap that hangs freely. It has a long brown tail with rufous outer rectrices. Upperparts and wings are brown. Long neck and red legs. The head is gray with a pale gray forecrown. Its neck, breast and belly are gray with scales. The underpart is buff with darker brown in the flanks and undertail coverts. It is territorial, easily frightened, and found in groups. Calls are noisy and raucous mostly in the morning. It is very agile as it easily jumps from branch to branch. A frugivorous and a seed-eater bird. A saucer-like structure nest is made of twigs and placed near the ground. Its clutch consists of 3 to 4 creamed eggs incubated by the female for 25 days.

La Guacharaca es un ave grande y endemica que parece a una gallina. Su longitud fluctua entre los 45 a 60 cm y de peso alrededor de 550 g. Habita desde los 100 a los 2500 m de altura y se la encuentra generalmente en los bordes de bosques húmedos cerca de pastizalesa y cultivos. Tiene una cabeza grisácea y frente blanca. Tiene una gola de color rojo que cuelga de su garganta. Patrón escamado blanco en el cuello y pecho. Sus ojos castaño oscuro. El pico y su base gris, y, blanco hacia la punta. Su mandíbula es más clara que la inferior. Remiges color marrón. Cola corta de color castaño y patas rosadas. No tienen dimorfismo sexual pues son ambos sexos son similares. Ave territorial, se asustan fácilmente, y andan en parejas y grupos pequeños. Su canto es ruidoso y estridente. Son muy ágiles ya que saltan de rama en rama en todos los niveles de los árboles. Caminan buscando semillas, insectos y plantas tiernas. Construye su nido cerca al suelo. Tiene forma de platillo con chamizas o fibras gruesas vegetales donde la hembra pone de 3 a 4 huevos de color blanco cremoso que incuba durante 25 días.
