Rupornis magnirostris
The Roadside Hawk is the most common hawk found in Colombia. Males are smaller and lighter than females. Sexes are similar. The eyes of adult roadside hawks are whitish or yellow. Its beak is relatively large. Its lower breast and underparts are barred brown and white, and the tail has four or five gray bars. It has strong yellow feet. The roadside hawk weighs 250–300 g (8.8–10.6 oz). Females are slightly larger than males. Juveniles are slightly different from adults. It is fairly common to observe a touch of light reddish-brown on the bird's wings, especially when seen in flight. Its call is a very high-pitched piercing squeak. In flight, the relatively long tail and disproportionately short wings of the roadside hawk are distinctive. With the possible exception of dense rainforests, the roadside hawk is well adapted to most ecosystems in its range. It sometimes build its nests on bromeliads growing on trees. It lays 1 or 2 white eggs with brown stripes. Incubation time is about 37 days. The roadside hawk's diet consists mainly of insects, amphibians, rodents, fish, snakes, lizards and small mammals. It will also take small birds and even sleeping bats. It is also an urban bird, it becomes aggressive when nesting and has been recorded attacking humans passing near the nest.
