Philherodius pileatus

An attractive diurnal heron that is easily identified by its silvery white body plumage, black cap and striking blue face and blue bill. Its back and wings are pale gray. Its belly is white. The neck, breast, and wing underparts are cream-yellowish. Its cream- colored neck is rather thick for a heron. Sexes are similar. Crown black, except for a white forecrown. Length from 51 to 59 cm (20-23”). Weight 420-630 g. Four or 5 white plumes of about 22 cm (8.6”) in length extend backwards from the rear of the crown. Inhabits forested swamps, rivers, marshes and lakes. Solitary and conspicuous. It feeds on frogs and aquatic animals. At hunting for fish, it stands quiet, bends and extends its neck, and rapidly introduces its bill into the water to catch the prey.

Es una especie de hábito diurno, atractiva e inconfundible ya que es la única garza con pico y cara de color azul y corona negra. El plumaje de las alas y la espalda de color blanco, lo mismo el vientre, el pecho y el cuello son de color blanco amarillento o crema claro. De cuatro y cinco plumas largas y blancas se extieden de su corona hacia atrás. La longitud corporal de un adulto varía entre 51 y 59 cm. Su peso corporal varía entre 420 y 630 g. La hembra y el macho son similares. Habita en pantanos y lagos pequeños alimentándose de peces, ranas y renacuajos durante el dia y no de noche. Se mantiene firma y sigilosa, al ver una presa se agacha, extiende su cuello e introduce su pico al agua pico a gran velocidad para asegurar la presa.
