Bubulcus ibis
The Cattle Egret is a short, thick-necked white bird that spends most of its time in fields rather than in aquatic environments. Yellow wedge-shaped bill and pale green feet. It measures between 46 to 56 cm (18.1-22 in). At breeding it develops a yellowish crown, back and chest. Widespread in open country, lawns, pastures, plowed fields, flooded fields and marshes. It forages on insects and ticks next to grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or riding on their backs of cattle. It follows large animals and tractors to feed on invertebrates that are stirred up from the ground. It flies towards fires to trap of flying insects. They build nests on trees or shrubs, in colonies with other herons and egrets. Clutch is 2-5 pale green eggs that are incubated for two weeks.
La garcita mide entre 46 y 56 cm (18-22”). Pesa entre 340 y 400 g. Tiene una nuca corta y gruesa. De plumaje blanco. Se la encuentra en campos abiertos pero menos en ambientes acuáticos. Posee un pico amarillo en forma de cuña y patas verde pálido. Durante la reproducción tienen un color amarillo-crema en la corona, espalda y pecho. Los inmaduros igual y de patas negras. Posan sobre los animales en busca de garrapatas y siguen tractors para alimentarse de insectos que salen del suelo recién arado. También vuelan hacia incendios para alimentarse de insectos que huyen del humo. Se alimenta también de crustáceos, peces e insectos acuáticos cuando visitan lagos, quebradas y charcos. Construyen su nido en árboles o en arbustos. Pone de 2 a 5 huevos de color verde y tonos azul pálido que incuba durante dos semanas.
