Hylocharis grayi

The male is mostly brilliant green with extensive blue markings on the upper throat and head. Both sexes have distinctive white feathers around and above the legs similar to white cotton balls. Female has a whitish color below and glossy green above. Pink bills with a marked black tip. Inhabits in tropical moist Andean forests and also nearby crops in humid lowland. Nectivorous and insectivorous. Pursues and catches insects in mid-air or glean them off foliage. It licks nectar 13 times per second as other hummingbirds. Its clutch consists of 2 eggs that are incubated for two weeks.

El macho tiene un plumaje verde brillante en casi todo su cuerpo. Tiene muchas marcas azules en la parte superior de su garganta y cabeza. Una característica importante de ambos sexos es la presencia de un manojo de plumas blancas alrededor de sus piernas. La hembra presenta coloración blancuzca en su parte inferior y un color verde destellante en su parte superior. De pico rosado con punta negra. Habita en bosques o matorrales húmedos de los Andes y también en lugares bajos en cercanías de agua y cultivos. Se alimenta de néctar e insectos. Su lengua toma néctar 13 veces por segundo. Pone dos huevos que los incuba durante dos semanas.
