The brown violetear is easy to identify. Its plumage is dull brown, with a rufous rump and grayer underparts. There is a violet patch running back and down from the eye, a malar stripe, and a glittering green and blue throat stripe. The bill is relatively short and almost straight. It is 11.5 m in length. It is found in altitudes between 400 - 1600 m. It also seen in epiphytes and coffee plantations. It feeds on nectar and insects caught in flight. The female usually lays two eggs. Its song is vigorous and loud. Females are similar to males.

Esta especie es fácil de identificar por su plumaje cafesoso, cola rojiza y grisosas partes inferiores. Tiene una franja de color violeta de arriba a abajo del ojo. También una línea malar. Un hermoso color iridiscente verde y una raya azul en su garganta. Su pico es relativamente corto y casi recto. Su longitud es de 11.5 cm. Se le encuentra entre los 400 y 1600 m de altura. Se le observa en epífitas y en cultivos de café. Toma néctar y atrapa insectos al vuelo. La hembra pone generalmente dos huevos que los incuba con esmero. De canto agudo y fuerte. No hay un dimorfismo evidente.
