The stunningly elongated outermost tail feathers of the male are purple with blue tips. Black bills that are sharp and pointed. Plumage is iridescent metallic green on back and crown. Inhabits subtropical and tropical montane forests of the Andes. The tail of the female is shorter. She mates with males having the longest tail lengths. Its shorter tails make it easier to lay and incubate eggs. They gather insects by aerial hawking. It forages near the ground, making repeated circuits to sources of food.

Es un silfo de cola esplendorosa y larga. De pico negro, corto y puntiagudo. Presenta en su espalda plumaje de color verde brillante con las partes inferiores más opacas. Posee una corona verde iridescente. Su cola es verde la cual es larga en los machos. La cola de la hembra es verde azul oscuro con puntas blancas y ahorquillada. El abdomen de la hembra es canela y dorso verde brillante. En zona andina entre los 1400 a 3000 m de altura. Pone e incuba 2 huevos. Capturan insectos al vuelo. Va y vuelve con frecuencia a las flores por néctar.
