This very small hummingbird produces a humming sound when it flies. Male has short, straight, black bill; upperparts dusky bronze-green, with white patch on either side of rump and chest. Large patch of purple plumage from bill down to its white chest. Throat and neck are iridescent purple and may look dark in little light. It has a whit pectoral band that extends at both sides of neck. Tail is long and forked. The throat of the female is white with brown dots and a white line by the eye. It inhabits in wet and foggy forests.

Un colibrí solitario de tamaño muy pequeño que habita en los bosques húmedos y bosques de niebla. De vuelo ondulado y un zumbido muy sonoro. Pico recto. El macho tiene la garganta color púrpura y la hembra blanca con puntos cafés. El macho tiene el dorso verde-ocre oscuro. Tiene una banda blanca que abarca los dos lados del cuello. Se le distingue por su parche blanco debajo del ala, de cola ahorquillada y larga. Pone dos huevos que incuba durante 15 a 16 días.
