Adelomyia melanogenys

The Adelomyia melanogenys is a hummingbird that measures between 8 to 9 cm (3 in) and with an average weight of 5 g (female 4.1 g). It is commonly found in the humid forests from 1000 to 2800 m altitude. It has a distinctive dark mask covering the eye and cheek and a pale white supercilium from the back of the eye down the head. The bill is rather short and black. The plumage color of its upperparts is green-bronze all over. Flanks are pale with specks of green and bronze. Underground parts are brownish with green speckles. Feather of the wings are dark together with those of its squared tail that ends with white or brown tips. No sexual dimorphism as males look the same as the females. It is interesting to note that this bird is the only species in its genus, that they are not gregarious, that they do not live in flocks, that they do not live in pairs, and that they do not make bonds or get together to suck nectar or trap insects. It is a solitary and promiscuous species. The males do not participate in any task after copulation. The hive-shaped nest is made by the female using plant fibers. The female incubates two eggs for 17-20 days and takes full care of the young.
