Its feather coloration pattern of this medium-size bird is unique. The male has a dark blue chest and head, its belly is white, green back and blackish wings. Females are bronze-green above and are less obvious than the male. Speckled green underparts and white tail tips are shared with the female. 12-13 cm in length. Less common at lower elevations. Feeds high in flowering trees. Also, it feeds on insects as it sallies or hawks from perches.
De pico más bien corto y grueso. El macho tiene el pecho y la garganta azul lustroso. Tiene en su nuca una franja grande blanca y su espalda es color verde brillante. La parte superior del pecho es verde; su vientre blanco y su cola es principalmente blanca. La hembra tiene espalda verde bronce, garganta y pecho café-verdoso con escamado blanco; vientre blanco y cola verde oscuro y un ápice blanco. Se le observan solitarias y posan en plantas florecidas.
