THE GREEN JAY HAS A CHARACTERISTIC VOCALIZATION

Cyanocorax yncas

The Green Jay measures from 20 to 25 cm (8-10 in) and weighs from 65 to 95 g (2.3-3.5 oz). It is found in humid forests from 900 (3000 ft) to 2600 m (8500 ft). In coffee, cacao and tree plantations such as pine. It is not found in the Amazon basin. No sexual dimorphism. Its iris is yellow, and with a short blue spot over the eye. Crown is white with a dark blue crest. This crest is absent in southern Texas down to Mexico and Central America (see images). Neck is white with blue feathers at its base. Blue head and black throat. The forehead and chest are blue. Its upperparts with green plumage and yellow underparts. Tail has green and yellow feathers. Black bill and black legs. Feeds on insects taken from branches, air or soil. It consumes seed and fruit and sometimes eggs and chicks found in nests. Cracks open hard seeds and nuts by pounding them hardly with its bill. Found in pairs or often in social groups at all seasons, communicating with each other with a bizarre variety of different calls. The loose cupped-shaped nest is built by both parents using twigs and sticks that is lined with rootlets, fibers, moss, and leaves. The clutch varies from 3 to 5 white eggs with brownish-lavender spots that are incubated by the female from 19-22 days. They live up to 10 years.

El Carriquí de Montaña tiene un longitude entre de 20 a 25 cm y su peso fluctua entre 65 y 95 g. Se encuentran entre los 900 a 2600 m de altura en bosques húmedos. Frecuenta plantaciones de café, cacao y pino. No se la encuentra en la región amazónica. No tienen dimorfismo sexual. Iris amarillo y raya ocular negra. Coronilla blanca con cresta o plumón azul. Nuca blanca con plumas azules en la base. Plumas azules también son visibles en manchas de la frente, superciliares y área malar. Las partes laterales de la cabeza, garganta y pecho superior de color negro. Su parte dorsal es verde oscuro. De abdomen o vientre de plumaje amarillo y covertoras color café. Las plumas de la cola verde oscuro with yellow outer feathers. Pico y patas negros. Consume insectos, semillas y gran variedad de frutos que encuentra en árboles, arbustos y frecuentan el dosel. También se alimentan de huevos y polluelos que toma de nidos. Atrapan insectos al vuelo. Se las encuentra generalmente en parejas o en grupos. Su postura varia entre 3 a 5 huevos que incuban por 22 días. Viven aproximadamente 10 años.
