There are 26 species of these arboreal, nocturnal and secretive birds. Feed on small mammals, bats, sometimes birds, invertebrates and small reptiles are also taken. Sometimes difficult to locate or observe except at roost close to trunk among leaves where they patiently wait for a prey. Live at the borders of heavily forested and humid areas of the three cordilleras. Sizes vary from 5 to 22 inches. Some live from 4 to 28 years depending on the species.

Sus tamaños varían entre los 13 a 55 centímetros. Pueden vivir de 4 a 28 años según la especie.
