Scarlet Macaws are the largest parrots in the world -- the length of the scarlet macaw can be up to 89 cm (35 in) and weighs about 1.4 Kg (3.1 lb). It inhabits in lowlands from 500 m (1640 ft) to 1000 m (3280 ft) in the lowland forests of the Amazon basin, and also found in open woodlands, and river edges. Most of its body shows a bright red plumage. Its face has no feathers and shows some tiny white feathers on a patch. This macaw has long wings and a very long tail. The rump and tail covert feathers are light blue, and the upper wing coverts bright yellow. The upper sides of the flight wings have dark blue feathers as well as in the tail feathers. A dark red with metallic gold iridescence is observed underneath the wing and tail. Some may display a green coloration in the wings. The macaw has a strong hook beak that breaks hard seeds and shells of nuts. It feeds on berries and seeds that are abundant in trees of the rainforest. Interestingly, the macaw consumes large amounts of clay that offset the effect of plant toxins. Monogamous. The posture is 2-3 white eggs that are incubated for 5 weeks. The young fledge 90 days after hatching. Some reports indicate that they live up to 75 years. They are noisy birds able to mimic human speech. Many are held in captivity around the world.
