RUDDY GROUND-DOVE

This ground-dove is versatile when it comes to habitat, they occupy riparian areas to suburban yards and open areas with bare ground. Flocks can include 200 or more individuals. Adult males have a pale grey head and neck while their upper body is a rich brownish red and the wing-coverts are black spotted. The underside is a paler brown, the underwings are black and brown; and, the tail is edged with black. The females have grey-brown upper bodies and there is less contrast between the body and the head, as opposed to the males. They are about 17 cm long and a weigh of about 47 g. Members of the pair typically stay close to each other at all times with the most noted exception occurring when brooding young or one is sitting on eggs. They feed on seeds, and also take snails and small insects. Their food is captured by pecking of seeds off the ground. Due to the amount of dry food this bird consumes, this ground-dove takes in a high quantity of water. 

Tortolita pequeña y rojiza de áreas húmedas abiertas y semiabiertas, es frecuente zonas urbanas, donde a veces percha en cables. Miden 17 cm de largo y pesan aproximadamente 47 g. Suele verse en grupos a veces de cientos de aves, que levantan el vuelo repentinamente desde el piso. Tienen dimorphismo sexual. El plumaje del macho es de color canela en general y de cabeza color café gris. Cola de borde negro. La hembra es de color café grisáceo, y no tiene escamas en el pecho. Menos contraste de color entre su cabeza y el resto del cuerpo. Como otras tortolitas, ambos sexos tienen un parche canela brillante en las alas, visible al vuelo. Se mantienen juntas cuando perchan except en tiempos de reproducción. Son monógamas y se perchan en pares. Al copular el macho hace sonidos con sus alas. Se mantienen en grupos cuando se alimentan de granos secos, insectos y consumen bastante agua.
