MIELERO COMÚN

Coereba flaveola

This is a common, tiny, active, warbler-like bird of tropical and subtropical forest edge and woodland. It is a distinctive bird with a slightly decurved downward black bill, black upperparts, bright yellow underparts, and a conspicuous bold white eyebrow. Crown and sides of head are also black. Pale gray to white on throat. Dark grey on back. Wings are dark grey with a white spot on base of the flight feathers. Yellow chest and a pale-yellow tone on belly and rump. Black tail, white on base of the outer feathers. Slate-grey legs. Males weigh 10 g and females weigh 9 g. It exhibits considerable geographic variation, with no fewer than 41 recognized subspecies; these differ in features such as the color of the throat (white, gray or black), the presence of absence of a white spot on the wing, the length of the bill, and the extent of yellow on the underparts. It feeds on small insects and spiders, also fruits and nectar. It is also an active nectarivore or also called nectar robber. These birds frequent flowering trees and shrubs where they often cling to flowers. Often while clinging the head downward it gleans for small insects and spiders from foliage, or creeps over trunks and limbs. It pierces berries to suck out juice. It probes small flowers to pierce the base of tubular corollas for nectar. They are found in pairs or in small family groups. It competes with hummingbirds for dominance.
