This tanager is a vividly-colored bird. The males are distinctive in having a black head and crown and black wings while the remaining plumage is rather pale. The female is dark green over the crown and nape with green upperparts and pale-yellow underparts. It is found at low to middle montane humid and cloud forests in the Andean region from 1000 to 2700 m. It is also found at lower elevations around Santa Marta. It is usually seen in lone pairs or small groups foraging on fruit and insects. It perches in branches of fruiting trees.

Esta tángara es muy colorida y atractiva. Su coronilla y nuca son negras incluyendo sus areas oculares. Presenta un sutil verde plateado a ambos lados de la cabeza, garganta y pecho. Sus partes inferiores son grises y los bordes de las plumas del pecho tienen una apariencia escamada. Tales plumas tienen los bordes negros. La parte superior es de un brillante color azul lustroso. Las alas y la cola son azul oscuro. La hembra es de verde-pardo en la coronilla y las demás partes cabeza, garganta y pecho verde claro. Se encuentra en bosques híumedos entre los 1000 a 2700 m. Fructíferos e insectívoros. Solitarios, en parejas o en grupos.
