Ramphocelus dimidiatus

The beautiful and colorful Crimson-backed Tanafger is generally found the lowlands and valleys of northern Colombia. It measures 18 cm (7 in) in length. The male has flanks and rump scarlet. Its whole head and chest are also scarlet or vivid red, becoming more bright red at its lower back and abdomen. Its tail is black as well as the wings, legs and feet. The thick bill is white with a silver metallic sheen below. The female has a duller and darker copper tone plumage with blackish underparts and a blackish bill. Inhabits in montane humid forests, scrubs and sometimes visit gardens. Clutch of two blue eggs with dark dots are incubated for two weeks.

Esta tángara se la encuentra generalmente en los valles y regiones bajas y húmedas en el norte del país. Mide 18 cm (7”) de longitud. Pico con mandíbula fuerte, brillante y gruesa. El manto, flancos, cabeza, pecho, rabadilla y vientre son rojo brillante de tono carmesí. Contrasta con el negro intenso de sus alas, abdomen y cola. Existe dimorfismo sexual ya que la hembra tiene la garganta y el pecho negro; cabeza y dorso de un sutil rojo y un rojo nítido en aparente en el abdomen y rabadilla. Se alimenta de insectos y fruta. La hembra pone dos huevos de color azul con puntos oscuros alrededor. El período de incubación dura hasta dos semanas.
