The small Rufous-throated tanager has a beautiful and distinctive orange-rufous throat patch and crown to nape and side of head to below eye are dark black. It looks spangled due to the black spots on the superior and inferior parts. Its bill, legs and feet are black. Found west of the Andes humid region from 600 to 1600 m. It is found at foothill areas. It is gregarious, in pairs, and mixes with other flocks. It feeds on insects and fruit at upper levels of forest and forest edges. It visits artificial feeders if fruit is offered. It forages quite low for a tanager.

Esta tángara tiene como su nombre lo indica una garganta rojiza o rufa. Su cabeza y coronilla son de color negro lo mismo alrededor del área ocular. De iris negro. Su pico, piernas y patas son de color negro. Cola corta y algo oscura. Su pecho y partes inferiores tienen puntos negros lo mismo en su parte superior. Se le encuentra al occidente de la cordillera Occidental cerca a ambos oceános a alturas que fluctuan entre los 600 a 1600 m particularmente al pie de loma. Se alimenta de fruta e insectos. Para ser una tángara es raro que busque alimento en partes cerca al suelo.
