This tanager is very common in the humid forests of the Andean region and common in dry scruby areas. It has a silvery greenish plumage, rusty reddish-colored cap and the shows a small black mask. Tail and wings are blue-green. Underparts have a whitish plumage. It measures 14 cm (5.5 in) and weighs from 18 to 27 g. In contrast to other tanagers, this particular tanager is mostly found solitary or in pairs perching in branches, tree fences as well as in scrub, brushy and agricultural areas. It feeds on insects for protein. It also feeds on fruit such as bananas, ripe green plantain and others. It frequently visits artificial feeders with fruit. Nests are built at the top of trees in the canopy or lower. The female lays two pale green eggs that shows dark spots.

Esta tángara presenta coronilla café rojizo y los lados de la cabeza negros formando una pequeña máscara. Sus cola y alas son de color azul-verde grisáceo, estas últimas con márgenes de color negro. Sus partes bajas son más claras y el abdomen es blanquecino. Habita en áreas deforestadas de zonas húmedas y rastrojos en regiones secas. Prefiere hábitats abiertos y generalmente se le observa en matorrales, bordes de bosque, plantaciones agrícolas, jardines y cercas arboladas. Se alimenta principalmente de frutos e insectos. Con frecuencia se le observa alimentándose de fruta en comederos artificiales. Su nido es en forma de taza abierta, el cual construye en las copas de los árboles. Ponen dos huevos de color verde pálido con manchas irregulares de tonalidad oscura. Es un ave que se puede observar solitaria o en parejas en las copas de los árboles y también en arbustos bajos. Mide entre 14 y 16 cm y pesa entre 18 y 27 g.
