Tachyphonus rufus

This a rather large tanager that measures 18.5 cm (7.3 in). The mail and females are very different in plumage color. The glossy blue-black-color male has a long tail. It shows small white patches on the upper wing that is not easy to see while not at flight. The female presents an entirely brownish-rufous plumage. Both have a pale black stout pointed bill. Found in pairs or in mixed groups. It is not found in forests but in open areas and sometimes in gardens. Clutch of 2 to 3 brown eggs that are incubated for 2 weeks. Insectivorous and frugivorous. The weight is between 26 and 42 g.

Su nombre se debe a la marcada diferencia de plumaje entre los sexos. Macho completamente negro-azulado brillante y la hembra color ladrillo uniforme. Son tángaras relativamente grandes que miden aproximadamente 18.5 cm (7.3”). El macho presenta coloraciones blancas debajo de las alas que son díficiles de ver excepto al vuelo. El pico de ambos es negro azuloso pálido. En parejas o en grupos en zonas enmalezadas, campo abierto, áreas cultivadas y bordes de bosque. Se alimenta de fruta e insectos. Pesan entre 26 y 42 g.
