The tiny adult male measure from 8.5 to 10.5 cm (3.0 to 4.1 in) and weighs from 8.5 to 11 g. It can be easily recognized due to two distinctive features: a black hood in the head and uniform olive upperparts. The underparts are yellowish-white. It has an almost squared and thick bill that is gray-bluish for seed picking. Tail and wings are brownish. Females have brown feathers on the upperparts, neck, and lower back. It is found in grasslands and agricultural lands of most of the country except in dry areas. Dispersive and nomadic during drought. A popular cage bird. It mixes with flocks and forage seed with other species.
Este pequeño espiguero mide entre 8.5 a 10.5 cm y pesa de 8.5 a 11 g. Tiene una capucha negra en su cabeza, nuca y pecho su parte superior es verde oliva con algunas estrías oscuras poco visibles. Su ojo tiene un iris color café. Sus alas son parduzcas con coberteras y plumas terciarias con márgenes color oliva. Cola parduzca. Pico azul grisáceo; piernas y patas negruzcas. Partes inferiores amarillentas y a veces algunas plumas amarillentas en sus flancos. La hembra tiene cabeza, garganta y cuello cafesoso y no negro. Se lo encuentra en pastizales, cultivos, y partes bajas en todo el país excepto en regiones secas. Es dispersa y nomádica durante épocas de sequía. Se lo vende para escuchar su canto en jaulas.
