The Village Weaver measures 17 cm (6.9 in) and weighs from 33 to 46 g. It is found in large and noisy flocks in a wide range of open and semi-open habitats, and urban areas. It principally inhabits in riparian areas, wetlands, bushy open land, agricultural regions where small seed is available. The male has a black head that extends to the nape. The black plumage mixes with a rufous band in the nape. The breast shows a triangular black area and stripes surrounded by yellow plumage that extends to all its underparts. The upper parts are yellow spotted with black. Tertials are black. The rump present black feathers bordered with yellow margins. Tail is beige. Legs are pink. The gray bill is conical and under the mandible there is black color. Marked dimorphism. The female does not have a black head but it is mostly pale yellow. It also shows a black ocular line. It feeds principally on seed and grain, and it is insectivorous. Their preference for small seed can be a problem for farmers. The nest is built using coarse leaf strips, grass stems and dry leaves. It is suspended from a branch. Males get together to make many nests in a particular tree. Its posture is 2 to 3 white eggs incubated by the female. 

El Tejedor Común mide 17 cm y pesa entre 33 a 46 g. Se encuentra en grandes bandadas y hacen mucho ruido. Habitan en ambientes abiertos o semi-abiertos incluyendo zonas urbanas. También se les encuentran en las riberas de los ríos, zonas húmedas con arbustos, y cultivos de sorgo y arroz. El macho tiene la cabeza negra que se extiende hasta su cuello que limita con una banda rufa. La parte superior tiene amarillo y se intercala con negro. Las terciarias son negras. La rabadilla tiene plumas negras con borde amarillo y la cola es color café claro. El pecho presenta líneas gruesas negras al lado de mancha negra casi triangular que se diluye al llegar a la parte inferior. Ojos rojos. Pico gris cuya mandíbula presenta negro en su parte inferior. Patas rufas. Dimórficas. La hembra carece de negro en la cabeza y es de amarillo claro. Una línea ocular negra es visible en su cabeza. Se alimenta de granos como el sorgo, millo o arroz. También consume insectos. Es una plaga en algunos cultivos. Hacen su nidos colgantes con tallos y hojas secas de gramíneas. Los machos hacen muchos nidos en un solo árbol para formar una colonia. La postura es de 2 a 3 huevos blancos que incuba la hembra.
