All species of kingfishers are found in Colombia. These extremely timid birds dive to catch fish, crustaceans, and amphibians. They also eat small birds, frogs, and mammals. After catching fish they stun it by beating it against a perch. The fish is turned around so it can be eaten head first. Kingfishers have unruly feathers arranged in their crests that are raised when disturbed. Easily identifiable by their size and color. Interestingly, the belted kingfisher is one of the few birds in which the female is more colorful than the male. Live in solitary pairs or can be found solitary.
