Birds of Colombia

antpitta | TOROROI,

ORDER/ORDEN: PASSERIFORMES

FAMILY/FAMILIA: GRALLARIIDAE

Perhaps the most difficult and elusive bird to observe. Lot of patience is needed to see them. Inhabit the dark part in humid forests. Very timid to movement and strong light. Can be seen following army ant paths where they steal their insect preys. They do eat ants. Mostly on the ground. Do not walk but hop. Vestigial tail and strong short bills. Short powerful legs that allow them to adopt a straight and distinctive upright posture. Both sexes incubate on two to three eggs in nest.
