Related to antbirds. Small birds (10-20 cm / 4-8 in) inhabit in the grounds of humid forests. Walk but not hop as antpittas. Do not follow army ants as other birds. Feed on insects. Of rusty brownish or blackish color. Usually alone or in pairs, but not in groups or mixed in groups. May sing perched or while walking through the middle of the day. However, difficult to observe. Because of the strong legs they take a distinctive upright posture and are well adapted to walk. Females lay two or three eggs and both male and female incubate them.

Estas aves son cercanas a los hormigueritos. Pequeñas entre los 10-20 cm (4-8 pulgadas) y habitantes en suelos de bosques húmedos. Capaces de caminar pero no de saltar. No siguen a las hormigas arrieras como otras aves. Se alimentan de insectos y otros animales. De colores aladrillados, cobrizos o negros y con pocos tonos blancos en sus plumas. Solitarios o en pares pero no en grupos entre ellos o con otras aves. Cantan en perchas o mientras caminan hasta el medio día. Difíciles de observar por su timidez. Por la fortaleza de sus patas caminan y pueden adoptar una postura recta y mantener cabeza en alto. Ponen de 2 a 3 huevos que tanto la hembra como el macho incuban.
