FAMILY BOMBYCILLIDAE

One species in the country. Cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) a nice northern visitor of medium size. Prominent and distinctive crest with black mask with peachy brown head lined with white, black throats, and a chest and yellowish belly. Short and wide bill. Waxy deposits found at the tip of secondary feathers make their broad and pointed wings appear waxy or silky-soft. The squared-tipped tail is typically yellow or orange depending on diet. Feeds on cedar cones, berry fruit, and a variety of insects. Pass berries bill to bill down the line of birds when one encounters a source of berries that others cannot reach. In this way, all birds can eat. Males and females look alike. Can fly at 40 km/hr (25 mph) and at high altitudes 600 m (2,000 ft). Eggs are bluish grey with dark brown spots. One or two broods and young leave nests about 15 days after hatching.
