Most are terrestrial and found in the Andean humid subtropical region. Only one species out of 19 lives in lowlands. In pairs or alone. Some species are adapted to altitudes of 4,000 m (12,000 ft). Fly poorly because of their short wings. Their tail is cocked and pointed towards the head leaving the anus exposed hence the name in Spanish (‘cover your behind’). Timid and occur in high densities in small territories. Very vocal throughout the day. Thick short pointed bill allows them to turn leaf litter and scratch ground for soft edible plant and animal material. Found in lower and dense vegetation and are usually identifiable by the vocalization of their songs.
