One species within this family in Colombia found at altitudes from 500 to 4000 m. These small, chunky, stout, short-tailed, short-winged and strong-legged birds are able to swim and submerge in rivers or ponds. Because of special blood characteristics they store more oxygen than any other passerines, allowing them to remain underwater up to 30 or more seconds. They also possess a nictitating translucent membrane to pull over their eyes to allow them to see underwater. White head and black feathers that are water-proof. They lack webbed feet and have adopted aquatic habits. Their short wings allow them to flip underwater and the bones are solid instead of hollow which reduces their buoyancy. Sharp claws allow them to hold on rocks. Water is prevented to penetrate in their noses due to special membrane.
