The great tinamou is a large, almost tailless game bird that lives on the ground.  They are native to Central and South America. Reduced in numbers due to hunting for food. There are several subspecies, mostly differentiated by their coloration. They inhabit subtropical and tropical humid forest, river-edge forest, and cloud forest at altitudes from 300 to 1,500 m (1,000–4,900 ft). Difficult to see and forage by walking quietly along the ground.  They emit a powerful haunting two-parted whistle, quavering, mourning song early and late in the day and sometimes at night. Very timid and may flush explosively from close range crashing off like cannonballs. Plumage rather plain overall, warm brown above and grayish below, with grayish (not reddish) legs.
