Trogon collaris

The Collared Trogon measures from 25 to 30 cm (10-12 in). Found in borders of humid forests ranging from 400 to 2000 m (1310-6600 ft). The male has a yellow bill and an orange ocular ring. Green plumage on head, breast, crown, neck, and upperparts. Its face, front and upper part of the throat with black feathers. The lower part of the throat until half of breast is green. Gray patch pattern in the wings ending with white and black bars. Red abdominal region. A white collar limits the green chest with the red underparts. The rectrices present barred undertail patterns with 3 wide white bands and many thin black and white horizontal bars. A marked sexual dimorphism is expressed in the brown plumage of the female that replaces the green of the male. The female has orange ocular rings as the male but the female has them surrounded by two incomplete white bands. The female has a yellow bill but with dark in the maxillary area. It is insectivorous and frugivorous (Trogon in Latin means fruit eater). It maintains a vertical position during perching and generally remains motionless (good for watching). If they see an insect on the ground, they sally and return to the same perching position to eat it. The size of the clutch is 2 to 3 white eggs that both incubate.

El Trogón Collarejo mide 25 a 30 cm y pesa de 40 a 70 g. Habita los en bordes de bosques húmedos entre los 400 a 2000 m. El macho con pico amarillo y anillo ocular rojo naranja. Un color verde con reflejos dorados en su cabeza, pecho, coronilla, nuca y dorso. Su cara, frente y parte superior de la garganta negro. Plumaje verde en la parte baja de su garganta hasta la mitad del pecho. Region ventral roja. Con collar pectoral blanco separa el pecho de su vientre. Plumas grises en la parte superior de las alas que limitan en un barrado blanco y negro cerca de las primarias. Las sapracaudales azul verdoso con puntas negras y las infracaudales negras con barras blancas. El dorso de la cola pardo leonado, y, barrada de blanco y negro en la parte inferior. Las timoneras con bandas delgadas negras intercaladas por 3 bandas anchas blancas. Dimorfismo sexual se observa en el plumaje café de la hembra en vez del verde del macho. El anillo ocular de ambos es anaranjado pero la hembra lo tiene rodeado de dos bandas blancas e incompletas. La hembra con pico amarillo y maxilar negruzco. Insectívoro y fructívoro. Perchan en posición vertical y se mantienen inmóviles. Atrapan insectos y regresan a la rama a comérselos. Postura de 2 a 3 huevos blancos que ambos incuban.
