It has a maroon tail with black borders and black central feathers. Male with brilliant iridescent dark green upperparts and flanks, with a black throat and chest that covers down to its belly, flanked by blue-green feathers. Black bills that are slightly decurved. The female is as distinctive with ochrish-green upperparts and whitish plumage underparts with a black central stripe that extends from the throat down to its belly. Its song is buzzy. Found in open vegetation with bushes in the humid and dry forests. The female lays 2 tiny white eggs that are incubated for 16-17 days.
Ambos sexos tienen cola de color marrón con plumas verde azuladas en el área central y puntas negras. El macho presenta un plumaje en su parte superior de color verde claro brillante. Pico corto y ligeramente curvo. Sus parte laterales son de color verde. Tiene una franja negra que se extiende de la garganta al abdomen, bordeada de plumas azul brillante en la garganta y el pecho. La hembra tiene partes superiores verde ocre y partes inferiores blancas con línea central negra. Se la encuentra en los bosques húmedos andinos. La hembra pone e incuba dos huevos por 16-17 días.
