BRONZE-WINGED PARROT
COTORRA COLINEGRA

Pionus chalcopterus

The Bronze-winged Parrot (Pionus chalcopterus) has a body which is mainly dark blue with a light gray chin patch and upper chest speckled with pink feathers. This parrot has yellow beaks and short red undertail feathers. The rump, tail and wings are dark blue with lighter blue underwings. The head is dark blue-green; the mantle, back and underparts are dark bronze-green with some blue tipped feathers and sometimes scattered red feathers. Average weight is 210 g. It generally prefers the canopy of forest and humid woodland but also occurs in adjacent habitats with tall trees. It appears to be rather nomadic in parts of its range, but the movements (possibly only in response to the availability of food) are generally poorly understood. It is typically seen in pairs of small groups of up to 10 birds. The bronze-winged parrot nests in dead tree cavities. The incubation of the eggs takes up to 26 dayts. It feeds on seeds of a variety of trees particularly of Guazuma ulmifolia (guázimo) y Ficus.
