The Red and Green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) bird has a dark red plumage in general. Its middle wing coverts, scapulars and tertiary feathers are green. The back, rump and tail coverts are blue. It has a blue tail with red tips with no yellow feathers. Upper mandible horn color with black on sides; lower beak is grey/black. Eyes are yellow. It shows characteristic red lines of tiny feathers on the otherwise bare white skin patch. This large macaw weighs from 1,050 and 1,708 g (2.31 and 3.76 lb). It feeds on a variety of seed from trees as well as fruits of Endopleura y Bertholletia, Virola and leaves of Erythryna. It remains on the top of trees while it eats. The female typically lays 2 or 3 white eggs in a nest made in a hole in a tree. The female incubates the eggs for about 28-30 days, and the chicks leave the nest about 90 days after hatching. Often seen in groups up to 70. It imitates voices and sounds.

La Guacamaya Rojiverde tiene ojos amarillos. Su cuerpo es principalmente rojo oscuro intenso con cobertores superiores medias de color verde y las rémiges, rabadilla y mayor parte de las rectrices externas de color azul. Presenta piel facial desnuda con líneas de plumas rojas que representa una clave esencial para su identificación. Tiene un pecho rojo brillante. Es de pico blanquecido encima y negruzco debajo. Pesa entre 1050 y 1708 g (2.31 and 3.76 lb). Su cola no tiene plumas amarillas. Los inmaduros tienen la cola más corta y el negro del pico es gris. Habita en bosques húmedos de tierras bajas, bosques y zonas abiertas con árboles dispersos. Se alimenta de semillas de una gran variedad de árboles y frutas de Endopleura y Bertholletia, arilos de Virola y hojas de Erythrina. Generalmente pone 2 a 3 huevos blancos. El período de incubación tarda entre 28 y 30 dias. Se agrupan en bandadas de hasta 70 individuos. Durante el día y especialmente en el amanecer y atardecer se alimentan en la copa de los árboles. Pueden imitar sonidos y voces.
