Cardinalids are found only in North and South America. The characteristic red color of their crest refers to the Catholic cardenal’s robes and stiff-squared biretta. Birds in this family are generally robust and are found in habitats such as rainforests, brushes, open areas or wooded edges. Most species in this family are medium-sized (4.5 to 9 inches long) and weigh from 0.5 to 1.6 ounces. Both sexes of cardinalids have strong, cone-shaped beaks that are used to crack open hard-coated seeds. The tail of the male is relatively larger than that of the female. The sexes show dimorphism showing distinctive appearances. Males in this family are usually more brightly-colored than females that usually have a pale brownish plumage. Most of these birds feed on seeds, fruits and insects. Some forage individually, in pairs or together with other species on canopies, scrubs, and others mainly on the soil. They are monogamous and become aggressive to fend off others from their territory during the breeding season. Their nests have the shape of a loose cup built high in trees. Chicks fledge once they are well-fed and able to fly. They include some grosbeaks, tanagers and buntings.
