Birds of Colombia

PIgeons, doves
palomas tórtolas

ORDER: COLUMBIformes

FAMILY: COLUMBIDAE

Familiar birds that feed on seed, insects, and fruits. Some found in window sills and ledges. 38 species are recorded. The larger species are known as pigeons and the smaller doves. Some live in trees and some are hard to observe. Agile flyers due to strong wing muscles. When disturbed, they burst into flight with their wings emitting a distinctive clapping or swishing sound. Produce ‘crop-milk’, which they secrete to feed their young. Can live from 5 to 21 years.
