WOODPECKERS construct HOLES FOR NESTing
CARPINTEROS CINCELAN TRONCOS PARA ANIDAR
Birds of wooded habitats however some are only found in rocky hillside feeding on cacti. Some are solitary others in groups and could be aggressive to other birds. Feed on insects, ants, spiders, caterpillars on the trunks and branches of trees. Also, feed on bird’s eggs, small animals, and tree sap. Communicate by drumming with their beak, producing an audible reverberatory sound. Nest and roost in holes that the make in trunks of dead trees. Holes are used for nests of other species of birds. Differences between sexes are small. Walk vertically up tree trunks due to strong claws, feet, and legs. Their tongues are long and sticky to trap insects and larvae. Tongues wind around the skull through a special cavity, thereby cushioning the brain and absorbing mechanical stress.
