The Picui Ground Dove (Columbina picui) Read in Spanish

Appearance: The Picui Ground Dove is a small, slender dove species with a distinctive appearance. It typically measures around 17-20 cm in length and weighs between 30-40 grams. The plumage of the Picui Ground Dove is predominantly grayish-brown with a pale gray belly and distinctive red legs. It has a brownish-gray head with a pinkish hue on the face and a reddish patch on the nape. The wings display a scaled pattern, and the tail is long and tapered.

Habitat: The Picui Ground Dove is primarily found in open habitats such as savannas, grasslands, pastures, and agricultural fields. The species prefers areas with scattered trees or shrubs where they can roost and nest, as well as forage for seeds and grains on the ground. Their distribution in Colombia is concentrated in the eastern regions, particularly in the Orinoco River basin and the Llanos region.

Behavior: Picui Ground Doves are generally ground-dwelling birds that spend much of their time foraging on the ground for seeds, grains, and insects. They can also be seen perched on low branches or fences. These doves are typically found in pairs or small groups and are known for their soft, repetitive cooing calls that are used for communication within the group and during courtship displays.

Breeding: During the breeding season, Picui Ground Doves engage in courtship displays that involve vocalizations, visual displays, and other behaviors to attract mates. Nests are typically located on the ground or in low shrubs and are constructed with twigs, grass, and other plant materials. The female usually lays two white eggs, and both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young.

Conservation Status: The conservation status of the Picui Ground Dove in Colombia is not considered a major concern.

Distribution

The Picui Ground Dove is primarily found in the eastern regions of the country, particularly in the Amazon River basin. These regions provide the suitable habitats of savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands that are preferred by the Picui Ground Dove.

Vocalization

The vocalizations of the Picui Ground Dove (Columbina picui) are relatively simple compared to some other dove species. The typical call of the Picui Ground Dove is a soft, repetitive series of three coos that sound like "coo-coo-coo" or "picui-picui-picui." These calls are often given in a rhythmic pattern and can be heard throughout the day, especially during the breeding season when the birds are establishing territories and communicating with one another.
In addition to their simple cooing calls, Picui Ground Doves also engage in courtship displays that involve more elaborate vocalizations and behaviors. During these displays, males may make soft, purring sounds or low, rhythmic coos to attract females. These vocalizations, combined with visual displays such as puffing up their feathers and bobbing their heads, are part of the courtship rituals that help pair up individuals for breeding.
