Grebes
are water birds that belong to the family Podicipedidae. In Colombia, several species of grebes can be found inhabiting freshwater lakes, ponds, and marshes across different regions of the country. One of the most commonly seen species is the Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps), which is recognized by its small size, compact shape, and distinctive whitish bill with a black band around it.

They have lobed toes on their feet, which are well-adapted for propelling them through the water. Grebes are skilled underwater hunters, feeding on fish, crustaceans, insects, and other aquatic prey.

These birds are usually observed in pairs or small groups during the breeding season, which can vary depending on the species. Grebes in Colombia build floating nests made of vegetation among reeds or other aquatic vegetation near the water's edge.

The conservation status of grebes in Colombia varies among species, with some facing threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and human disturbance. Efforts are being made to protect and conserve these birds through habitat preservation, monitoring programs, and public awareness campaigns.
