Appearance: The Northern Silvery Grebe (Podiceps juninensis) is a medium-sized waterbird with a characteristic silvery-white coloration on its head and neck during the breeding season. It has a slender body, a long neck, and a pointed bill. Outside the breeding season, its plumage is mostly gray. They have red eyes and dark markings on their face.
Habitat: The Northern Silvery Grebe is typically found in freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving rivers. It prefers vegetated areas along the water's edge for nesting and foraging.
Behavior: Northern Silvery Grebes are strong swimmers and divers, foraging underwater for small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. They are known for their territorial behavior and may defend their nesting territories vigorously against intruders.
Breeding: Breeding season for Northern Silvery Grebes typically occurs during the wet season when water levels are higher. They construct floating nests made of vegetation in shallow water and both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the young.

Distribution

Central Andes: The Central Andes region of Colombia, which includes parts of the departments of Caldas, Risaralda, and Quindío, among others, could also be a potential habitat for the Northern Silvery Grebe. Lakes and wetlands in this area may provide suitable conditions for this speciesspecies.
Sumapaz Paramo: The Sumapaz Paramo, located in the Cundinamarca department, is a high-altitude paramo ecosystem where the Northern Silvery Grebe may also be present. This unique habitat with its wetlands and lakes could support populations of this grebe
Chingaza National Natural Park: Similar to the Colombian Grebe, the Northern Silvery Grebe might also be found in the Chingaza National Natural Park, a protected area known for its diverse bird species. The park's high-altitude habitats could serve as suitable environments for the grebes.
