| 43 Species currently existing - 1 introduced |
Old World Sparrows are small, sturdy birds in the family Passeridae. They usually have short, thick bills adapted for eating seeds and grains, though they also take insects, especially when feeding young. Many species live close to humans in towns, farms, gardens, and open country, while others inhabit grasslands, scrub, or rocky areas. They are generally social birds, often seen in flocks, and most build rounded or cup-shaped nests in holes, bushes, or buildings. The best-known species is the House Sparrow, which has spread widely around the world.
